Frequently Asked Questions About Diamond Jewelry

Q. Is it really safe to send diamonds via FedEx®?
A. We use FedEx® because they have a proven track record of successful deliveries.

Their overnight shipping is fully insured and we like them so much, we use them for our own transactions with jewelers and jewelry dealers worldwide.

Q. What is a diamond certificate?
A. A diamond certificate is a grading report which is issued by an independent lab. This documents the weight, color, clarity, dimensions and cut of a diamond.

When issued by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) the certificate is called a Diamond Grading Report or Diamond Dossier.

When issued by the EGL (European Gemological Laboratory) the certificate is called a Diamond Certificate.

Q. What is the difference between a certificate and an appraisal?
A. A diamond certificate is issued by an independent source and has no price attached to it. This process is only intended to grade the stone for quality.

An appraisal is the estimation of a specific appraiser at a specific time, essentially it is the appraisers expert opinion as to the cost of replacing a piece (including the stone).

Q. Does JewelryPaq™ buy diamonds without certificates?
A. We will always prefer to purchase diamonds that have been evaluated for quality by the GIA or EGL, simply because certification gives our appraisers an immediate idea of their value.

However we buy uncertified diamonds too. Our appraisers are highly trained in their field and capable of making educated and fair estimations of the value of any gemstone.

Q. My diamond doesn’t have a certificate, does that mean it isn’t worth as much?
A. The certification process is simply an evaluation of the quality of the stone itself.

Even poor-quality diamonds can be certified, and conversely a high quality diamond may not have certification paperwork.

Certified diamonds are actually more valuable, because the certification process requires time and money.

Q. What if I decide to keep the ring and sell only the stone, or vice versa?
A. We employ skilled jewelers for this very reason. If you decide you want to keep the diamond and sell us your setting, or decide to keep the ring itself and sell the stone, we can help.

Our craftsmen can separate the stone from the setting without damaging either one. We’ll even send what you want to keep back to you at no cost.
