Why Sell Your Old Gold Jewelry?
Is your jewelry box cluttered with old gold jewelry that you no longer wear? Do you find yourself sifting through out-of-date, ill-fitting, or just plain ugly gold jewelry in order to find the pieces that you want to wear?
If so, you have probably wished on more than one occasion that you could be rid of these old gold jewelry pieces, but felt guilty about selling pieces of jewelry that cost you or someone close to you so much money.
Unfortunately, very few of us have the financial means to have jewelry hand-crafted just for us. Instead, the jewelry that we own comes from large retail markets that are flooded with pieces similar to or even identical to the ones we own. While we ourselves or those close to us may have spent what seemed like an impressive amount of money on this jewelry when it was purchased new, most of the old gold jewelry we own is probably not worth as much today as it was at the time of purchase.
The fact of the matter is, very little jewelry that is produced is collectable or even valuable as jewelry. Much of the old gold jewelry in your jewelry box was most likely mass-produced, meaning that thousands more pieces just like it were produced and sold to other consumers. Mass-produced jewelry takes decades – or even longer – to grow in value, if it ever does, because it takes decades for pieces of commercially made jewelry to become uncommon enough on the market to have any kind of antique or collectible value.
You may wonder how, with gold prices increasing, that your old gold jewelry could be worth less now than it was when it was purchased. That’s the catch – it’s worth less as jewelry, whereas it is worth more if it is sold for scrap gold.
It’s possible that you’ve never considered it, but the gold that makes up your old jewelry is much more valuable than the piece of jewelry itself. Surprised? Unless you are a jeweler or a gold broker, you may not realize that the gold in your old jewelry is more valuable as scrap than it is as a piece of jewelry.
Still confused? Consider this scenario: you have an old gold school ring in your box. Although the gold is genuine, the stone is not. You have not worn this ring since graduating high school, and doubt that you ever will again, because, though the ring was fashionable at the time, styles have changed and the ring is no longer attractive.
A jeweler or pawnshop would have very little interest in this ring, as something as personal as a school ring is not likely to be of interest to very many people. However, a gold broker would be willing to give you more cash for this old school ring, because a gold broker will sell use the gold in the ring as scrap. A gold broker has no interest in selling the ring as jewelry – only in the gold that comprises the ring.
Still skeptical? Then consider another scenario: maybe you have several pieces of the gold nugget-styled jewelry that was all the rage several years ago. The gold nugget jewelry design was very popular for a time – and also very easy to produce. Therefore, it was available to retailers from many different jewelry manufacturers.
If you take a look at Ebay (www.ebay.com), or just take a trip to your local used-jewelry store or pawnshop, you are likely to see many more of these gold nugget pieces, just like yours, and selling for much, much less than what yours retailed for when they were purchased new. Jewelry resellers know that they are not likely to sell out-of-date jewelry for a good price, if they sell it at all, and this reality is reflected in the price they are willing to offer you for your old gold jewelry that is no longer desired in the market.
If, instead, you offered your old gold nugget jewelry to a gold broker for appraisal and sale, you would likely be surprised to find that he or she would offer you a much more reasonable amount of cash for your gold. The difference is that the gold broker is interested in the jewelry as gold, gold that can be melted down and reused in other gold manufacture, than in the jewelry itself.
Most of the old gold jewelry languishing unworn in your jewelry box would take years to grow in value, if it ever does. However, it is worth more today as scrap gold. Don’t waste another moment digging through old gold jewelry that you no longer wear just because you feel guilty about getting rid of something that you or someone close to you paid hard-earned money for! Instead, consider how much more this old jewelry can be worth to you if you sell it for cash, and contact a gold broker today.
